Reseller distributors

From the first years of the development of stereoscopy, publishers and photographers have had the ambition to offer their images to as many people as possible. To succeed in disseminating their productions, they will rely on a vast network of very varied shops: jewelry stores, hairdressing salons, publishing houses, watchmakers, bookstores, souvenir shops, stationery, pharmacies or optical stores. Stereoscopic photographs are then transported efficiently from Paris, for example thanks to the development of the railway.

Today, we still lack precise information on the organisation of this system and we find it very difficult to appreciate the importance of these networks. In an attempt to see more clearly, we have systematically noted the wet labels or stamps left by these various shops on the back of stereoscopic cards. These indices are presented here with a view to the productions that these stores disseminated.
